Proper dental hygiene is more than good habits — brushing teeth regularly, flossing after meals, visiting the dentist and so forth. It’s also about avoiding negative habits.
Often, though, people aren’t aware that what they do could ruin oral health. Below are some ‘harmless’ habits you do every day that cause trouble for your teeth:
This is a weird but common habit. People do it because it’s refreshing, cool and just fun. But this could wear away enamel, the outer layer of the tooth, making your teeth sensitive to hot and cold food.

The teeth might be strong, but they’re not designed to chew such hard objects. So, stop munching on ice — and other hard materials, such as pencils, hard candy or bone.
You’re probably unaware you’re doing this unless somebody tells you. If you experience a faint, but constant pain in your jaws or head, that could indicate you have Bruxism, the medical term for teeth grinding.
What’s wrong with this? Well, it could cause tooth sensitivity, broken teeth, gum recession, tooth loss or TMD syndrome. Often, this is due to crooked teeth. So unless you go to an orthodontist, and have your teeth straightened, Bruxism will persist.
Brushing too hard
Brushing teeth is a staple in good oral hygiene, but it’s possible to have too much of a good thing. Over-brushing chips away enamel, too. Plus, it could make your gums red and swollen — or worse, cause them to recede. Remember that plaque is soft and loose, so you don’t have to scrub too hard.
Rather than focusing on the intensity of tooth brushing, pay attention to the duration. You should clean the teeth for two minutes every time.
